Yesterday, I was walking (on the wild side) in the street, a « rock » playlist on my headphones. Suddenly , the song « Perfect day » by Lou Reed came up. Oh my god, it made me remember a lot of things ! The song I was always listening with my walkman when I was 13, the song I was playing on the beach to impress girls, the famous BO of the movie Trainspotting. So as you’re expecting, I am going to talk to you about the famous singer, guitarist, co-founder of the influential rock group the Velvet Underground but also the legendary solo artist : Lou Reed.

Lou Reed was born Lewis Allan Reed at Beth El Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, on March 2, 1942. He spent most of his childhood in Long Island, where he grew up in a Jewish family. Reed took an early interest in music and played the guitar in several bands during his high school years. Reed graduated from Syracuse University, where he studied writing and film. After college, he moved to New York City and began writing songs for Pickwick Records.

In 1964, Reed scored a minor hit with the parody single « The Ostrich. » Pickwick hired a band, including future Velvet Underground bandmate John Cale, to back Reed’s vocals. The two became friends, collaborators and roommates. The two friends recruited the guitarist Sterrling Morrinson and the drummer Maureen Tucker. This is the beginning of a famous band.

However, the song Perfect day, from the album «  Transformer » has been written during the solo carreer of Lou Reed, which started in 1972. This album had been recorded during Lou Reed’s travel in England and had been co-producted by the music legend, David Bowie himself who would said about him : « he has a melodic sense that is simply well above anyone else’s in rock’n'roll »

This album is a mix of glam and rock, there are 11 tracks in it. The most famous are for example « Sattelite of love », « walk on the wild side » and obvioulsy « Perfct day » featuring Mick Ronson who is playing the piano on it. This song is talking about love and drug addiction.

Lyrics :

Just a perfect day
drink sangria in a park
and then later
when it gets dark we go home
Just a perfect day
feed animals in the zoo
and then later a movie, too
and then home

Oh its such a perfect day
I’m glad I spend it with you
Oh such a perfect day you just keep me hanging on
you just keep me hanging on

Just a perfect day
problems are left to know
Week enders all night long
it’s such fun
Just a perfect day
you make me forget myself
I thought I was someone else
someone good

You’re going to reap just what you sow
You’re going to reap just what you sow
You’re going to reap just what you sow
You’re going to reap just what you sow
